Tom Pilgård's Booklist

I have books marked [P] in paper version, and books marked [E] in Ebook version. If a book is not marked, it is not yet part of my collection. Most of these books will hopefully be puchased in the future. However, some of the books are only listed for completeness.

I rate the books on a scale from 1 to 5. 1 for trash, 3 for average books and 5 for a few really brilliant books.

The qualities that I value most in a book are interesting and likable characters, a different and fascinating world, and a story that is both entertaining and thought provoking.

Feel free to send me an email if you have questions or comments.

    • Science fiction/Humor
The first book is obligatory for every SF fan. I like them, but I find the later books a bit repetitive.
  • * Watership Down [E] (3)
  • Modern fable
Mostly for young adults, but still good.
  • * Shardik (2)
  • * Maya 1-4 (3)

    • Urban Fantasy
Another Anita Blake/Rachel Morgan/Sookie clone, but entertaining and well written. Riley Jenson is half werewolf, half vampire. She works for The Directorate solving crimes that involves supernaturals. There's plenty of sex in the books, but fortunately not in amounts that get in the way of the story like in Anita Blake.

    • * Shadow of the Scorpion (Prequel) (4)
    • * The Technician (4) [EP]
    • Science fiction
Neal Asher is the latest addition to a whole batch of new British science fiction writers. His style is similar to Alastair Reynolds and Richard Morgan. Gridlinked is the first book in a loosely linked series featuring Polity Agent Cormac as main character. It includes weird aliens, rogue AI's and psychotic battle droids :) Line of polity is an even better followup. The pace is not as forced as in gridlinked, and we learn a bit more about the various alien threats to the polity. P
    • Spatterjay
    • * The Skinner [P] (4+)
    • * The Voyage of the Sable Keech [P] (4+)
    • * Hilldiggers [P] (4+)
    • * Orbus [P] (4+)
    • Science fiction
These books are stand-alones taking place in the same universe as Gridlinked. They are at least as bizarre as Asher's other books. The skinner has a really nice ending too. I especially enjoyed the little "games" between the old battle droid and the runcible AI
  • * Cowl [P] (4)
  • Science fiction
This is a stand alone book not related to the Runcible universe. It involves grand scale timetravel spanning billions of years. A future civilisation has created a superior genetically engineered being. But now this Frankensteins monster has escaped into the past, and is trying to destroy its creators. We follow a girl and a mercenary from the 22nd century as they become involved in the battle raging across time. Neal Asher is well aware of the paradoxes inherent in time travel, and unlike most authors of timetravel stories, he doesn't sidestep these problems, but actually incorporates them into the storyline. Very impressive!

    • Foundation's Fear (Gregory Benford) [EP]
    • * Foundation and Chaos (Greg Bear) (3) [EP]
    • Foundation's Triumph (David Brin) [EP]
    • Science fiction
This is a classic. The main subjects are politics and psychology. The original trilogy should be read first. I really really liked the foundation books back when I first read them as a teenager, but I was a bit disappointed when I recently re-read them. I think it is because there are so many great SF books available today that Asimov doesn't stand out like he did earlier.

Rather funny at times. Piers Anthony has some really weird ideas about the nature of the incarnations. I don't think there's a single mythological tradition that he didn't steal from when he wrote these books. The later books, especially the last two, tell essentially the same story as the first five, but from very different viewpoints. All the books are entertaining; not just the first two or three in the series which is usually the case with Piers Anthony.

    • Fantasy
Shortstories by many different authors. All the books are edited by Robert Asprin and they all take place in the same universe. This is one of the most ambitious shared world projects. The authors frequently include each others main characters in secondary roles. There are no true heroes in thieves' world. Everybody is more or less a lying, cheating, selfish bastard. This combined with a generally dark atmosphere and a bizzarre twist to many of the stories, makes this series really great. I would have preferred some longer stories, but if you like shortstories, this is guaranteed hit. (Janny Wurts' Lythande takes place in the same universe)

    • Historical fiction
We follow Ayla, a Cro-Magnon girl who is adopted by Neanderthals when her parents die in an earthquake. The first book and the first half of the second book are good. The rest of the series deteriorates into equal amounts of really bad romance/erotica and descriptions of how Ayla makes another revolutionary invention, or finds another miraculous medical herb.
  • * Emma (4) [E]

  • Persuasion [E]

  • Love and Friendship [E]

  • Romance
19th century romance is not usually my favourite genre, but I had to surrender completely to Jane Austen's books. They are witty and intelligent and touching at the same time. Austen's characters deliver the most insulting and sarcastic comments in the politest possible manner. Several of the books have also been made into really great movies. The BBC miniseries version of Pride and Prejudice is among my all time favourite movies.
  • The Prince of Nothing (4)
    • * The Darkness that Comes Before [E]
    • * The Warrior Prophet [E]
    • * The Thousandfold Thought [E]
    • Fantasy
Strange and fascinating fantasy trilogy. This is a promising first series from R Scott Bakker. We have a polyteistic religion waging holy war on the heathen monotheists. Sorcerers that relive a millenia old apocalypse in their nightmares every night. An ancient alien enemy the noone has seen for centuries. An emperor who dreams of rebuilding his declining empire, and finally a warrior-monk who is a master of manipulation. All of them are trying to hijack the holy war for their own reasons. Even with all these goodies, I was a bit disappointed. It turns out this trilogy is only the beginning of the saga. Almost nothing is resolved at the end of the 3rd book, and the following books haven't been written yet. The storylines that I found most fascinating filled very few pages in the otherwise pretty long books and even with further books coming to complete the saga, I still suspect that Bakker has left so many loose ends out there that it will be difficult for him to get them all tied up. We'll have to wait and see what he comes up with.
  • The Aspect-Emperor (4)
    • * The Judging Eye [E]
    • * The White-luck Warrior [E]
    • The Horns of Golgotterath
    • Fantasy
Sequels to The Prince of Nothing
  • * Neuropath [E] (5)
  • Psycho Thriller
This is really a philosophy book disguised as a thriller. Bakker takes on the implications of modern neuro-science. For example the idea of free will, consciousness and all the other rationalizations and fairy tales we tell each other to maintain the illusion that we are special and above the rest of nature.

Nice first series from Elizabeth Bear. This is a setting of global warming, disturbed sea currents, collapsed ecosystems and resulting food wars. An alien starship is found on Mars and the two remaining superpowers: Canada and China are both desperately trying to copy the technology and win the race to the stars away from the dying earth. The major players involve an ex-soldier rebuilt more or less from scratch after a planecrash who just might be able to fly FTL starships, a psycology professor released from jail to continue her work on sentient AI's to help control the ship and finally the rogue AI based on Richard Feynman that she was imprisoned for releasing on the internet.
  • * The Face In The Frost (2) [EP]
  • Light Fantasy.

On the surface this is a classic fantasy tale of an evil sorceress who has dominated the world for hundreds of years, and of course a prophecy of a child who will be the bane of the sorceress. The world and all of the main characters are both bizarre and very fascinating. Even the "good guys" are really terrifying.

The series starts out as typical medieval fantasy. As it progresses it gradually becomes science fiction. All books are standalones, but are loosely linked. Many of the main characters are female. The books are not written in the above order, and Bradley has no aversion to revisionism, so the chronology becomes very cryptic.

I read a sample of this and I just had to try the whole series. The style is similar to Guy Gavriel Kay's. This means complex characters, wonderful language and a slowly revealed main plot that brings all the characters together for the grand finale. Also like most of Kay's books, the setting for this series is easily recognizable but with a bit of magic added. It takes place in the holy land during the rule of the crusaders. The series starts out with great promise when the daughter of the King's Shadow meets a djinni on the way to her wedding. But I was dissappointed when I got past the first book. Book 2 and 3 are extremely slow moving, and we don't get much character development either. The grand finale is also somewhat dissappointing. Many significant events that only happened after serious manipulation by the powers working behind the scenes, are left totally unexplained, and seemingly unnecessary to the story.

The series begins in the near future, when mankind discovers that the galaxy is filled with aliens. The plot revolves around the difficulties in dealing with aliens with superior technology. One threat is purely physical, but another perhaps more serious threat is the cultural influence. We have numerous examples of primitive cultures that were wiped out in the meeting with western civilization. This is essentially the same situation. The books are standalone stories each dealing with a separate incident. They vary in both style and tone. I found the second book very depressing.

Dan Brown is the new bestseller of conspiracy theory thrillers. I was very disappointed. The plot is pretty thin, and the main characters are even thinner. They have absolutely no depth and they don't evolve at all through the book. Dan Brown even uses them as props to drive the plot. When he needs a little suspense, the history professor and cryptologist become extremely stupid. When he wants the plot to move on, the same characters suddenly receive brilliant insights out of nowhere. The only thing that saves this book from total failure is Brown's description of the history of religion. While this is very popularised it might provide some new insights to readers unfamiliar with a scientific approach to religion.

Classic fantasy tale of a cursed kingdom, and a prophecy on how to lift the curse. Fascinating mix of magic, religion, and court intrigue. The second book is even better. Bujold's flawed heroine reminds me of Terisa Morgan from Stephen Donaldson's Mordant's Need series. Bujold also expands on the very strange and fascinating mix of magic and religion in the Chalion universe. I don't recall seeing anything quite like it before. Bujold started out writing highly entertaining space opera, and now she's getting even better in a fantasy setting. I'm really looking forward to her new fantasy series.

This Bujold's new fantasy series. It's not quite as complex as the Chalion series and the last half of Beguilement actually reads more like a romance novel than actual fantasy. It's still very nice, but definitely a light read compared to Bujold's other recent books.

This is a young adult series where vampires have gone (semi)legal. The story is that vampirism is a medical condition caused by a genetic anomaly. This manifests sometime during puberty and causes the teenager to become a "fledgling" - a sort of intermidiate stage between human and full vampire. The final change occurs a few years later. As there is a lot of stuff fledglings need to learn during this period, the stage is set for vampire finishing school Hogwarts style, but for vampires instead of wizards.
Like in the Twilight, Sookie and Anita Blake books, vampires are not (universally) evil. They worship a nature goddess inspired by native american mythology. The books are a bit cheesy, but still much better than the popular but horrible Twilight series.

All Chalker's books are similar in both style and content. His cast of characters consists of lots of weird and fascinating creatures, described in great detail. Every Chalker book I have read have at least one body swap and/or sex change :) Begin with Well of Souls or Quintara Marathon if you haven't read any Chalker before. He has a tendency to run out of new ideas after the first two or three books in a series, but until then his books are great.

In this series mankind meets aliens. Some very advanced, and some well below humans in technological knowledge. As with all Clarke's books this series is also very realistic, with emphasis on SCIENCE and not fiction. The books are well written, but I also find them very depressing. When humans meet inferior aliens, they destroy them, and when they meet superior aliens, they whine like babies. And the few heroic and unprejudiced humans cannot do a thing about it. Very realistic, but not very optimistic. This is the main reason, that the grades drop as the series progresses.

The Kay Scarpetta books have become very popular, so I thought I would try one out. They are basically standard mystery books, but seen from the perspective of female medical examiner Kay Scarpetta. I thought the first book in the series was nice, but nothing special. Probably in an effort to be realistic, Kay Scarpetta has a bit too much self-doubt and general low self-esteem for my taste.
  • * The Passage (2) [EP]
  • Apocalyptic Fantasy
A genetic experiment at a military lab goes terribly wrong and unleashes vampire-like creatures on the world. The first third reads like a really good Stephen King novel. Deep and interesting characters etc. Then everybody dies and the next chapter begins 80 years later. At this point Justin Cronin seems to have tired of character descriptions and decided to use cardboard cutouts instead.

  • Mordants Need (5)
    • * The Mirror of Her Dreams [EP]
    • * A Man Rides Through [EP]
    • Fantasy. Very complex, and somewhat gloomy at times. However, this is probably the simplest and lightest of Donaldson's series, so this might be a good place to begin. If you like Mordant, perhaps you are ready to take on Covenant or Gap. If you don't like Mordant, then stay away from the others. Trust me, they are far worse! :)

Thomas Covenant is the worst antihero imaginable. He is a notorious coward, very egoistic, he is always whining, and oh by the way: He is also a leper! This is absolutely the darkest series Donaldson has written. The first chronicle is about the need to strike back at evil. In the second chronicle the theme is how to avoid becoming evil yourself, when using violence to strike back.

Horribly complicated plot, and many of the main characters should be in a closed psyciatric ward. This said, most of the characters possess a peculiar dignity. This is the best quality of the series. I actually like many of these sick people! Warning: People are NOT nice to each other in Gap!

Donaldson has said in an interview, that when he gets an idea for a new book, he asks himself if he would write the book even if he was certain that it would never be published. Only if the answer is yes, will he begin.

All of the books take place in the Dragonlance Universe. They are all classic quest fantasy inspired by the AD&D roleplaying system. Most of them are ok for young adults, but definitely not works of art. As you can see, Weis and associates have written thousands of pages in the Dragonlance series. Some of them are even good :)

  • Eddings writes light fantasy with simple plots, and not very deep characters. Apparently he only knows one plot. All the books are different wrappings of the same story. The books are nice light reads beacuase you never have to worry about anything going wrong. The question is not so much if the hero or the villain wins, but rather how long it will take for the hero to catch the villain and mete out the proper punishment for all his evil deeds

    • Epic Fantasy
Malazan is different from any other fantasy I've read. I would highly recommend it. I will not say anything about the plot. Partly because it's so complex that I can't really describe it anyway, and partly because I really haven't figured it out myself yet. I'm on the 4th book now, and I'm still not completely sure what's really going on, or even if several of the main character are actually good or evil! Malazan has a history that goes back several hundred thousand years, and all this history is slowly revealed, often putting events from previous books in a different light. This means I will definitely have to re-read the entire series once I'm done. There are hundreds of characters, most of them interesting. And minor characters (even those presumed dead) have a habit of turning up later in the books. This is one long story, so don't expect anything to be resolved until the last book. Further this is not light reading. I think people's reaction to Malazan will depend on whether they enjoy figuring out the complex plot starting with very little information.

    • Science Fiction
This was a major dissappointment. Philip Jose Farmer is one of the 'great old' science fiction writers. He has won lots of awards, but I really can't imagine why. He starts out with a really nice idea here. Every human who has EVER lived wakes up at the same time along the 10 million miles long river on riverworld. Every age and culture is mixed together. There's almost no technology, but people cannot die permanently. They just wake up next morning at a random spot along the river. The very slowly advancing main plot centers on the question of how and why this has happened. In the meantime just about nothing happens. Characters are cardboard thin stereotypes, and all the wonderful opportunities of the mix of cultures are totally wasted in some occasional cheap pocket philosophy and feeble attemts at ethic discussions. There's even (gasp) sex in the books! This is of course also made bland and boring. I have no idea how the story ends, and I don't intend to find out. I wasted enough time plodding through book two in the naive hope that there must have been SOME reason for the Hugo award, but no...

The writing style is similar to Eddings'. Feist's books are not quite as funny as Eddings' but they have better plots. Bad things actually do happen occasionally in these books. The Empire Trilogy is much better than the others. Janny Wurts contibutes with a darker atmosphere and a much better plot. Wurts and Feist complements each other very well. Feist delivers the action, and Wurts the atmosphere and complex characters. Wurts has a tendency to write very long and gloomy books when she is on her own.

These books all take place in the AD&D Forgotten Realms Setting. Most of them are targeted at young adults, and they are pretty standard quest-fantasy. R A Salvatore has written so many Forgotten Realms books, that he earned a seperate entry in my list. He always writes all the books in a series himself and he is consistently a class better than the other forgotten realms authors with the possible exception of Kate Novak

Complex and original plot. Very brutal and tragic in some passages. Wizard's First Rule is: People are stupid! If you tell them a lie they hope is true, or a lie they fear is true, then they will believe the lie over the truth every time. This is the most important rule to learn for every wizard. Even the mightiest spells are of no use if you're up against an opponent who understands this rule, and you don't.

Really cool vampire saga. Vampirism has become legal in the US. The problem is that if a vampire actually eats his victims, (instead of just tasting :) he cannot be held in any prison. This is where Anita Blake: Professional Vampire Hunter steps in with stakes and silver bullets. In the first book she is hired by none other than the master vampire of the city to find out who's killing off all the powerful vampires of St. Louis one by one. The series starts out as more or less standalone murder mysteries involving something supernatural.
Warning: From book 10 onwards, the series deteriorates into low-quality porn. It seems Hamilton has completely stopped writing supernatural mysteries and all there's left is a sexual Mary Sue fantasy. Very sad. Go read some Charlaine Harris or Kim Harrison instead.

Same style as the Anita Blake series. Merry Gentry is a princess of the Royal Elven Court. She is unfortunately also a halfbreed, so no immortality for her. After a series of assasination attemps she fled the elven court to live among humans, but now she has been found, and someone wants her to come back home. Merry Gentry is more mature and pragmatic than Anita Blake. I like it better than Anita's frequent hysterics. The plot in this series is almost as sex driven as the latest Anita Blake books, but it works a bit better in this series, so I'll probably finish it.

Very good series. It spans more than 3000 pages, and the first 6-700 pages are used mainly to describe the very complex world, that the story takes place in. It can be hard to get started, but it is worth it! The world in itself is so different from ours, that those first 700 pages are simply necessary to be able to keep up, when the plot begins to unfold, and the really weird things begin to happen. This series would get a (5) if it wasn't for the "Deus ex machina" ending, and the fact that Hamilton uses up to ten story-lines simultaneously!

Similar to the Night's Dawn series in style. Lots of story-lines, and slow moving in the first half of the book. Since this is only one book it isn't nearly as bad as in Night's Dawn though. This one also has a proper ending, which is a big plus :) The main character left home to become a space pilot, but ended up as a mercenary instead. During a raid for his employer, he is planning a little personal raid just for himself. He has heard rumors of a great treasure in the temple of the Fallen Dragon, but what he actually finds is quite a bit different from what he had imagined.

    • Scince Fiction
Very similar to Night's Dawn in both plot and style. This is a saga at least as complex as Night's Dawn. But Hamilton has gotten rid of the excess storylines and put in a proper ending instead :) This work clearly shows Hamilton's growing experience in the craftmanship of writing SF. There are however still a few opportunities for improvement. I found many of the characters a bit annoying, and missed someone I could really identify with. I actually think Hamilton did a better job with the Joshua and Louise storylines in Night's Dawn. I also found it a bit disappointing that Hamilton felt it necessary to let people be so incredibly stupid to set off the crisis. Finally the moral dilemma of what to do about the Prime Aliens seemed a bit forced, and I don't feel that any serious arguments were presented. Well, enough criticism, this is still an extremely well written and entertaining story :)
  • The Void (4-)
    • * The Dreaming Void [EP]
    • * The Temporal Void [EP]
    • * The Evolutionary Void [EP]
    • Scince Fiction
This trilogy is a sort of sequel to The Commonwealth saga. It takes place in the same universe 1500 years after Judas Unchained. Some characters from the original saga are still around, but most of them not quite in the same form as before. It seems the black hole in the center of the galaxy is not quite a black hole after all. A religious sect is founded when 'The dreamer' shares his dreams of the paradise within the void. Now they are planning a pilgrimage to this supposed paradise, but the alien Raiel warns that such a pilgrimage will cause the void to expand and consume the entire galaxy. Around half of this series takes place inside the void. These parts are actually more fantasy than science fiction. I found them pretty boring and predictable. The Commonwealth part is good, but there were too many unexplained events and loose ends for my taste. Once again Peter Hamilton has written a trilogy that should really have been edited down to two books.

    • Fantasy/Mystery
These books are fun mysteries with a sprinkle of vampires, werewolves, and witches. These are much better than the Aurora Teagarden mysteries. The characters have more depth, and the plots are more complex. The main character Sookie Stackhouse is cursed with the 'gift' of being able to hear other people's thoughts. This is a serious handicap for your social life in a small southern town. Things get exciting when a vampire moves into the neighbourhood. I can't help comparing these to Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake novels. They share the idea of vampires coming out of the closet and becoming semi-legit members of society. The writing style is very similar (strict first person perspective), and Sookie's personality is very similar to Anita Blake's. So, if you like Anita Blake, you'll almost certainly also like these. There are some differences though. Sookie doesn't 'level up' in power in each book like Anita does, so we don't get the cataclysmic battles between supernatural powers that Anita provides in almost every book. On the other hand, this means that Harris doesn't have to think up worse and worse end-of-level baddies to keep the stories going, and I think this is actually an advantage as the seris progresses. Also, this series doesn't seem to deteriorate into softporn as the latest Anita books have, even though Sookie gets her part of romance with the different supernatural beings inhabiting the series :)

Rachel Morgan is yet another Anita Blake clone. And I'm happy to say that the books are really great. The Inderlanders (mainly vampires werewolves and witches) have come out of the closet like in the Anita Blake books, but with the twist that a genetic disease have killed off much of humanity, so the two poplulation groups are almost the same size. This leads to an entire mirror society of Inderlanders including police and courts, since the human police are just not equipped to handle werewolves or vampires, or even demons. As Rachel Morgan says: It's not illegal or even immoral to summon a demon. Just very VERY stupid :) Rachel Morgan is a young earth witch who has just quit the Inderland police force and started out as a private investigator together with two partners Ivy and Jenks. Ivy is a very scary 'living' vampire, and Jenks is a 6" tall pixie. The first books are more or less murder mysteries, but there are hints that Rachel Morgan has hidden abilities that will be explored in later books.

  • Science Fiction
The main character was raised by martians. Now he has been "rescued" and brought back to earth. The first part of the book where all the strange things we humans do, are seen through the eyes of a stranger works really well. The last part however is one more attempt to describe how to achieve a utopia, where everybody lives in love and harmony. I guess Heinlein's version is no worse than most other versions, but I still find it rather naive.
  • * Starship Troopers (4) [EP]
  • Science Fiction
This story is very different from the movie based on it. True, there are bugs and mobile infantry, and the main character is named Johnny Rico, but that's about it. The movie is clearly an attempt to make a satire of the book. The government is portrayed as manipulative control-freaks. The propaganda clips are ridiculous and it is strongly hinted that the government provoked the war with the bugs. The portrayel of Carl as a Nazi-scientist with telepathic abilities doesn't help either. The book on the other hand, explores the possibility of a militaristic meritocracy, and compares it with democracy as we know it. There's nothing ridiculous about the government that Heinlein describes in the book. He also dedicates several chapters to a description of the philosophy of such a system. Heinlein clearly feels that democracy has failed, and would like to promote a system where you have to earn the right to vote, by proving that you are willing to risk your life for others. This is the true form of science fiction, where you ask the question: What would the world be like if... I think the book is very good. Even if you disagree with Heinlein, he asks some very hard questions about the western version of democracy, that critics will have to consider. I really don't understand the motive behind the movie. It is easy to make a satire if you first change the original to something stupid and ridiculous, but then you have achieved excactly nothing. I have the feeling that the director wanted to make a fun action-movie, and just picked a novel at random from a known author with some alien bugs in it. Then he discovered, that the story really doesn't work without the philosophical parts, and since they obviously had to go (this is a hollywood movie after all!) he had to make it into a satire instead. After all this criticism, I would like to say that I also like the movie very much. You just have to remember that it has almost nothing to do with the book. A nice review of both the book and the movie is posted here

This is a classic. Herbert has created a very fascinating world. It is very advanced in some areas, and almost medieval in others. Computers are outlawed, but human mentats more than compensate for this loss. The invention of personal shields have made combat a one-on-one business with swords. However, advanced genetic engineering has made these warriors truly awesome. The key to everything in this world is the mysterious Spice. It is used in countless religious rituals, it prolongs life dramatically, and no spaceship captain can pilot his ship without it. It is only found on one planet in the entire galaxy, and it cannot be manufactured artificially, so of course everybody wants that planet: Dune.

They can talk, but apparently they see the world in a very different context than humans do. However, the fate of the human civilization depends on reaching an understanding of the Calebans very quickly. In the second book some scientists are conducting an experiment on evolution. The experiment runs over many generations, and suddenly they find that it cannot be controlled any more. Both stories are very strange and fascinating. Frank Herbert always concentrates on the development and capabilities of people rather than machines and gadgets. This approach works especially well in these two books.

This is Kay's version of the tale of King Arthur, Queen Guinivere and Sir Lancelot. It is however set in a different world, and intermixed with numerous other celtic myths. The series tells the story of the epic struggle between good and evil. Guy Gavriel Kay has edited much of the Middle Earth material published after Tolkien's death, and this is Kay's first attempt to produce something similar himself. He succeeds very well. I think he has surpassed the Lord of the Rings.

All books takes place in The Kingdom of Gwynedd, and focuses on the conflict between humans and the magic-wielding, long-lived Deryni. The conflict is complicated by the fact that humans and deryni can interbreed, producing halfbloods that inherit some of the magic powers of the deryni. Classic story about the need for good magic to battle evil magic. Of course the Church's standpoint is that all magic is evil, and all magic-wielders should be burned alive. Very traditional, but nonetheless nicely written.

With proper amulets entire cities can be levitated. In the first book a lord from the dark shore arises, bringing with him monsters that are immune to the effects of charm. The plot and characters are ok, but nothing special. Standard quest fantasy culminating in the defeat of the apparently invulnerable dark lord.

This is a complex and entertaining saga. All three series are linked. The books are listed chronologically. Exile was written first though, and should also be read first. Then Intervention, and finally Galactic Millieu. The saga spans six million years, beginning at the present time. As always time travel results in a lot of problems, but May handles it better than most other time-travel writers :) The other main theme is psychic abilities like farseeing, mindreading and telekinesis. May also uses these possibilities very well.

McCaffrey almost always uses female main characters. I think her main audience is teenage girls, but nevertheless I have enjoyed many of her books. The stories are nice, but not very complex or original. Her most well known work is probably the Pern novels. Begin with Dragonriders if you like fantasy, and Freedom or Crystal Singer if you like Science Fiction. There are however elements of both SF and fantasy in most of the books.

This is a hugely popular vampire series now including a series of movies. The target audience is clearly teenage girls. The books are absolutely horrible: The plot is barely adequate for one book, but here it is stretched out over four using mainly purple prose as filler. The characters have no personality and seem completely unable to have healthy relationships. Despite that I actually finished them all. Mainly because they provide a fascinating (but scary!) insight into what apparently makes American teenage girls tick.

This is standard quest fantasy. All books are standalone, but related. The plots are not very complex or original, but the magic system is a kind of science based on chaos and order, with some rather weird dependencies. Some of it reminds me of enthropy and thermodynamics and conservation of energy. It actually makes sense, and many complex situations arise when wizards battle each other. It is very far removed from the standard D&D fireballs and magic missiles :)

The human mind can be backup up and stored in a computer or transmitted instantaneously to a distant world and downloaded into a new body. This makes it very hard to commit actual murder. Nevertheless in the first book someone has tried and nearly succeeded doing just that to a very powerful man. He hires the main character to solve the peculiar case of his own murder. Richard Morgan is very entertaining and creative. This is an extremely well written debut. A bit unpolished here and there, but that is only to be expected in a first attempt. I'm already looking forward to future books.
  • * Market Forces (3+)[EP]
  • Science fiction
Very dark story taking place in the near future. Society is stratified into a majority of poor people living in cordoned off slum areas and a superrich elite running large corporations that have become more powerful than most states. The main character works in a "Conflict investment" department of one of the most succesful and ruthless companies. Conflict investment is really a euphemism for dealing arms to third world countries plagued by civil war. Often to both sides simultaneously! And if the conflict is slowing down, a few choice assassinations are usually enough to get it going again.

Nice fantasy series for young adults. Refreshingly grim! The plot is a fairly simple sequence of encounters. Probably to avoid confusing the teenage target audience, but nevertheless really well written. Gah, just when everything was going so well, a pathetic whining teenager shows up in the second book. Why does every other author writing for young adults think this is such a great idea? Things pick up again in the last book. It would have been better to drop the last half of the second and the first half of the third book though.

This is very poor quality heroic fantasy combined with equally poor quality chauvinistic erotica of the kind where all the beautiful women are arrogant bitches until they are conquered by a "real" man and realise that their only purpose in life is to please their man. A New England college teacher (the author's alter ego?) is transported to the counter-earth which has never been discovered because it circles the sun excactly opposite the earth. He is briefly trained and then saves the day by besting countless experienced warriors in battle, and of course he also finds "love" in the proces. The characters are all stereotypes and the plot is a primitive sequence of seperate incidents.

This is supposed to be a fantasy classic. I fail to see one single reason for this! First of all it doesn't really seem to be fantasy. There are a few mystical elements, but they are never explained and apparantly they have no relavance to the rest of the plot. The plot is very depressing. All of the main characters are unhappy most of the time. The king for instance is only happy when he can escape from his duties for a little while and read a book from his beloved library. It is typical for the plot that the library is burned down, thus leaving the king with absolutely no pleasure left in his life. The message seems to be that most people are given cruel and joyless lives by fate or whatever. People can certainly try to change their miserable lives, but they probably won't succeed, and evil will probably triumf in the end. All this is delivered in a style strictly following the rule: Why use two sentences when you can say the same in five? I'm normally quite patient with slow-starting books, but in this one absolutely nothing happens for the first 150 pages. The only thing I got out of this book was some speed-reading practice.

This is a brilliant series. The main characters may be children, but this is far from a children's book. The characters are complex and believable. None of them are entirely good or evil. The underlying philosophical theme of the series is about growing up, gaining knowledge and experience. There are obvious parallels to original sin, where knowledge was gained at the cost of "innocense". Pullman is critical of organised religion and as a consequence the plot was simplified and much of the philosophical content was removed from the movie version of The Golden Compass to avoid insulting American fundamentalists. Even this amputated version of the story is a great fantasy tale on its own.

Ayn Rand is the creator of the philosophy called Objectivism. It is a challenge to the traditional western "turn the other cheek" ethics. Ayn Rand celebrates the rational mind, and fiercely maintains that Man is an end in himself, not just in sacrificial service to other people or society or god. The books can be preachy and Objectivism has turned into a pretty narrowminded cult. Nonetheless it's almost scary how accurate Atlas shrugged was in its predictions on how the western welfare states would develop.

Dark high-tech science fiction. A curious mix of advanced technology and decadent decline. Humanity is plagued by rogue AI's and alien viruses. Huge slower-than-light spaceships that noone knows how to build anymore are crewed by chimeric ultras modified until they are closer to being machines than human. The plot centers around an archeologist who discover a dead alien civilization that was wiped out very suddenly and violently 900.000 years ago. Perhaps the same menace is still around and threatening humans too. None of the main characters are really likeable, but as the story progresses and they have to make ever harder decicions, it is hard to avoid a certain admiration. The atmosphere is similar to both Donaldson's Gap series and Mieville's Perdido street station.

Classic adventure for young adults. Nice, but nothing we haven't seen before. The complete series consists of seven books: One for each year Harry spends on Hogwarts. Each book is written for readers of the same age as Harry, ie 11 in the first book and 17 in the last. Book four for example is more than doble the size of book one and has a considerably more complicated plot. Book five is essentially a repetition of the same plot as the first four. Apparently Rowling only knows one story and just keeps on telling it. And it really doesn't help to make each book 50% longer than the previous one! I can understand that an 11 year old can act a bit foolish at times, but I thought people were supposed to become smarter, not dumber, as they grow up. You would think even Harry Potter would have learned how the plot goes by now...

Post-human 'gods' on Mars are recreating the siege of Troy. Sentient robots on the edge of the solar system are worried about the amount of quantum disturbances on Mars. On Earth excactly 1.000.000 humans live excactly 100 years each in an absolutely carefree environment where everything is provided for them and every injury healed and the memory of the traumatic incident erased. They are also analfabets and have no knowledge of human history. This is even weirder than Hyperion, and there are some really great bits here and there. Unfortunately none of it is properly tied together in the end. Several events requiring great effort to orchestrate for the powers behind the scenes are left totally unexplained and seemingly irrelevant to the rest of the fragmented plot. So we're unfortunately still waiting for another work matching the Hyperion Cantos.

The Eschaton announces itself to humanity with the following message: "I am the Eschaton. I am not your god. I am descended from you, and I exist in your future. Thou shalt not violate causality within my historic light cone. Or else." This is tremendous fun if you like the science behind the books. (Follow the links to get a basic idea of the concepts) Unlike most other science based fiction (Stephen Baxter springs to mind), Stross manages to get all the science right and at the same time develop compelling characters and plot. Humanity discovers that the "Or else" in the message from the Eschaton should be taken extremely serious. Attempts to timetravel has resulted in suns 'spontaneously' going nova, thus effectively containing the causality violation.

At the age of 32 she finds a locket owned by her real mother and finds out she can use it to enter a parallel world stuck in a medieval feudal social structure. Not all is as it seems though and meeting her original family is a bit of a culture shock :) The parallel worlds setting is used extremely well in this series, playing a very active role in the plot other than just the usual way to get the main characters into a fantasy setting.

Ciaphas Cain is a comissar (morale officer) in the space marines. Through no fault of his own, he has gained a reputation for being a hero. Actually he's a selfish coward, but every time he thinks he has found a quiet corner of the battlefield he stumbles over a hidden enemy headquarter or similar, and end up as an even greater hero. Funny and lighthearted which is a rarity in the warhammer 40K universe. Reminds me of the Flashman novels.

What I find interesting about these otherwise very average fantasy novels is that Watt-Evans breaks with several fantasy conventions. While the tale of the unwilling hero is pretty typical, the main characters in these books frequently succeed in living normal boring lives for long periods. The Great War in The Misenchanted sword isn't won as the climax of the book, but very early and off-page! Magic isn't just taken for granted and used as an unquestioned Deus ex Machcina. The main character of The Misenchanted Sword performs science-like experiments to figure out the abilities and limits of his enchanted/cursed sword. The "wizard" in With a Single Spell needs to figure out how to kill a firebreathing dragon with a single fire-spell at his disposal. My main problem with the books is that the characters just aren't as clever and rational as the author tries to convey. I think that young adults would really enjoy the books though.

There are nine princes and four princesses of Amber. They are all tough, ruthless and cunning, and they all want the throne. This series is a magnificent Machiavellian saga, where it is very difficult to tell the heroes and villains apart :) Unlike any other fantasy I've ever read.
